Analysis of disaster displacement and the urgent need for measures to recognize and protect the rights of populations experiencing (im)mobility in the context of climate change, disasters, and environmental degradation in Brazil.
Torrential rains in recent weeks have led to flooding that affected one-third of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This event can be considered the most severe climate disaster in the region's history, and possibly in Brazil as well. About 450 of the 497 municipalities that make up the state have been impacted, affecting over 2.1 million people and displacing another 600,000 (Government of the State of RS, 2024). After a brief pause, the rains returned, expanding the reach of the flooding to lower-lying areas.
